The “Why” Behind Your Child’s Behaviors

When you see or experience a child or teen acting out, what is often your first thought? For most, that first reactionary thought is not one of empathy nor is it thinking about the deeper meaning behind the behavior. If you take a step back and search to understand why a child may be having a certain “undesirable” attitude or outburst, it can solve the problem in a faster, friendlier, and less stressful way.

A Bright Future Ahead

Elyssa is a proud parent of five-year-old twin boys. While in preschool last year, Elyssa and the boys’ teachers noticed that their social play was a little “off” and that they were not participating in groups or playing with the other children. The preschool referred Elyssa to Nexus-FACTS where a diagnostic assessment was completed, and the children received a preliminary diagnosis of Autism.

Learning Trust

Charlotte, 5 years old, started her kindergarten year of school extremely dysregulated. Charlotte was referred to Nexus-PATH’s School Case Management where her case manager worked with her and her parents to build relationships and identify what she needed to be successful.

How Do I Encourage My Husband To Spend Less Time Working?

My husband lost his job at the start of the pandemic. Which was scary but he has since found a new one. My problem is he now works all the time putting in long hours – more than I think he needs to. I don’t mind caring for the kids and managing the house but I barely see him and he’s missing our kids' activities. I think he’s afraid to lose his job again. How can I get him to stop working so much?

Where Do I Get Help for My Daughter’s Mental Health?

Can you recommend a particular type of hospital that can help my daughter? She has a long history of experiencing emotional trauma including having two stillborn children. She seemed to shift from PTSD to Schizophrenia, but she refuses help. I cannot deal with this any longer; I am feeling tired and drained and I need to get her the help she needs to get over her trauma.

How To Help My Child’s Anxiety

It feels like the last three years have seen an uptick in anxiety, especially for children. This time has been scary for adults, let alone developing children who are just beginning to learn and explore the world outside of their home. With all these recent stressors, how can we help keep kids feeling safe and secure in today’s world?

Learning to Self-Advocate

In late 2018, Julia was referred to the Healthy Transitions program at Nexus-Kindred by Douglas County. Julie was almost 18 and determined, anxious, and unsure of where to begin.

How Do I Ask My Family About My Uncle's Passing?

When I was young, my uncle died. I was too young to understand but I’m pretty sure he died by suicide. Which I’d like to know more about but I don’t know how to ask because my family doesn’t talk about it at all. How can I broach the subject? And do these tendencies run in families?
