When Izzy first began her journey at Nexus-Woodbourne Family Healing, it wasn’t easy. She found the transition to the program difficult, especially since she didn’t have access to her phone. “It was hard at first,” Izzy recalls, “but over time, it got better.”

Izzy faced challenges prior to arriving at Nexus-Woodbourne, both with her family and her ability to connect with the world through her phone. Reflecting back on her journey, Izzy is proud of how far she’s come.

“My experience here has been awesome,” Izzy says. “It’s really helped me with my family situation and mindset. It helps me think more clearly and has made me more interactive with others.” At Nexus-Woodbourne, Izzy was able to find not only a safe space to grow, but a community where she could interact with peers and staff in meaningful ways. She had a habit of relying on her phone, but now she’s made great friends and has become more interactive.

Learning to Manage Her Emotions

Izzy’s improvements are reflected in her day-to-day activities. At first, she would express an attitude toward activities or situations, but over time, she began to enjoy herself and interact with people, which allowed her to foster a positive way of managing her emotions. Her anger management and communication skills have improved immensely, especially with our employees. She now feels comfortable pulling someone aside whenever she needs help.

Izzy has a passion for music, fashion, and drawing. In support of her love for fashion, our team gifted her a sketchbook, where she’s been able to put her fashion ideas on paper. “My goal is to be a fashion designer,” Izzy says. “I’ve already started working on some designs, and it feels so good to have something to work toward.”

When youth arrive at Nexus Family Healing residential programs, they received a “Welcome to Wellness” bag full of comforting elements for their bedroom. Then once they graduate from treatment, they can take all of their new belongings with them. Izzy recalls receiving her bag. It made her feel special and she was excited to see what was inside. She also celebrated Christmas with Nexus-Woodbourne staff and residents, where she received and enjoyed all her favorite gifts from her Christmas list, facilitated through Nexus-Woodbourne’s Youth Wish List program. Another highlight of her time here was her birthday party. Thanks to the generosity of our donor, Tere Geckle, who funded our new Birthday Program, Izzy was able to enjoy a fun sleepover with her friends, along with cake, gifts, girl talk, and party favors.

“It made me feel good, especially since the last two birthdays weren’t so great. My friends loved it,” said Izzy.

Moving Forward with Confidence

Through it all, the staff at Nexus-Woodbourne has provided unwavering support. She admits that it’s been a journey, but it’s all been very supportive. She credits the staff for teaching her  how to create positive habits. With their guidance, Izzy has learned the importance of self-control and effective communication, encouraging her to move forward with confidence.

Her advice to others coming into the program? “It’s hard at first, but you’ll get used to it. Focus on your program and no one else.”
Reflecting on her experience, Izzy feels proud of the progress she’s made and admits that she feels good about herself now. Her transformation, growth, and the power of support have really had a major impact on her, and she knows her family will feel good knowing seeing how much she has blossomed since she started her journey with us.
