Host Homes
Trusted network of care that supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Independent living programs in North Dakota
Supervised Independent Living
Voluntary service for young adults who can live on their own while continuing to receive support services to become more independent and self-sufficient.
What do Supervised Independent Living services include?
- Independent living skills training
- Transportation costs
- Education support services
- Employment support services
- Health education services
- Provided with furnished apartment, school-based housing, or may provide their own living setting

- Approved living arrangement under North Dakota’s Continued Care
Young adults live without 24-hour supervision allowing them to become independent and self-sufficient.
Chafee Program
The Chafee Program is a partnership between Nexus Family Healing and the ND Department of Human Services and is one way to assist custodians in meeting the foster care policy requirement of assessing and addressing independent living needs of foster youth.
Youth receive access to voluntary programs for education, housing, transportation, and other resources. The overall goal of the Chafee Program is that all former foster individuals will achieve outcomes:
- Have sufficient economic resources to meet their daily needs
- Have a safe and stable place to live
- Attain academic or vocational/education goals that are in keeping with the individual’s abilities and interests
- Have a sense of connectedness to persons and the community
- Avoid illegal/high-risk behaviors
- Postpone parenthood until financially established and emotionally mature
- Have access to physical and mental health services
Program snapshot
- For youth ages 14+ who are or were in foster care
- Enables youth in the foster care system to successfully transition to living independently
- Provides financial assistance to youth
