Minnesota Adoption Services
Adopting a child into your home is a lifelong commitment. As a licensed adoption agency, we work hard to help bring youth and parents together in permanent family settings.
Our services are available across Minnesota and are provided free of charge:
- Adoption home studies and home study updates
- Parent training and education
- Child-specific recruitment services
- Child placement services
- Relative adoption services
- Post adoption services
We serve youth up to age 21 who are under state or tribal guardianship.

Become an adoptive parent
Completing an adoption home study is the first step to becoming a licensed adoptive parent. Below are the necessary steps your family needs to complete for the home study process.
Steps to complete home study process
- Attend a 16-hour pre-adoption training conducted by the Children’s Home Society of Minnesota. Once completed, provide your certificate of completion to Nexus.
- Start the inquiry process by filling out the Prospective Foster/Adoption Family Inquiry Form: https://family.binti.com/users/signup/kindred-family-focus-rfa
- After you complete the Prospective Foster/Adoption Family Inquiry form, a Nexus licensor will contact you to set up a meet and greet meeting either virtually or in-person to discuss the home study process and answer questions.
- The home study worker will begin to schedule home study meetings with you. A minimum of three meetings will be scheduled; more may be necessary to complete the assessment. Once it is determined that Nexus is a good fit for your family, you will be given access to the online licensing platform to begin the paperwork
- Complete a 4-hour Agency Specific Training. This training can occur prior to 16-hour pre-adoption training or after it.
- Complete remaining licensing paperwork over the course of the licensing process.
- Complete a Home Safety Checklist on your house.
- Complete state and agency required trainings throughout the licensing process.
- Attend a Family Support Meeting with your support system.
- Your Home Study Assessment document is completed and approved.
- You are licensed!
