Foster Care Services in Minnesota
A safe and loving home for every child.

When children enter foster care due to an unsafe and/or unstable home environment, Nexus provides safe, supportive foster homes while their families work toward stability and reunification. We work hard with the child’s custodial team to reunite these families. When that isn’t possible, we help children find permanent, loving homes through adoption services.

Who we serve
Children, teens, and young adults (from birth to age 21), as well as individuals and families interested in fostering.
What we provide
Emergency, short-term, long-term and whole-family foster services designed to keep children safe and supported while families work toward stability.
Foster care services & programs
Foster care
When children enter foster care, we provide foster homes to care for these youth while their families get back on their feet. We work hard with the child’s custodial team to reunite these families. We keep children safe and well cared for while their families are getting the help they need. We offer emergency, short-term, long-term, and whole-family foster services.
Our foster parents are incredibly important to us, and we’re here to provide ongoing training, 24/7 crisis support, and respite care along the way.
Open your heart and home
Foster parents are regular people. Some work at home or in the office; some own or rent their home; some have many children or none at all. Yet the difference they make is extraordinary.
Youth in foster care experience an array of challenges far beyond what we may imagine. With the right foster family, a child can receive the care, love, and support they need until they are able to return home safely to their family.

How does it work?
1. Let’s chat!
Let’s start by having a conversation. We can answer your questions, discuss your interests, and share information about what it means to be a foster family.
If you’re ready to move forward, that’s wonderful—we’ll start the application process with you. If you decide it isn’t the best time for your family to foster, that’s just fine! There is no pressure from us. Contact us today to schedule a conversation
2. Start the paperwork.
Once you’ve decided to move forward, you’ll need to complete an application, schedule a background check, and provide references.
We’ll gather information about you and your family and your reasons for wanting to foster, so we can effectively match children who fit your family.
3. Prepare for success with some training and support.
Foster families are considered part of our professional team. Before and during your time as a foster family, you’ll participate in training programs. We want you to feel confident and successful every step of the way!
4. Wait for your licensing.
Licensing, assessments, and background checks can vary from a few weeks to a few months. Your social worker is available to answer questions during this time of waiting.
5. Welcome a child into your family.
Once the preparations are complete, the journey is just beginning! Your family’s social worker will develop an ongoing relationship with you and provide 24/7 support.

Foster care FAQs
What is foster care?
Foster care is the temporary placement of children and youth with families outside of their own home when they are in need of a safe, stable, and nurturing environment. When a child must be separated from their family situation, we help find them a healthy and safe home until permanency can be found.
How do children end up in foster care with Nexus Family Healing?
Children often enter the foster care system at no fault of their own—when their home life has become unsafe and/or unstable, often because of child abuse, abandonment, or neglect. Children referred to Nexus come to us with a wide range of life experiences, mental and physical health needs, and varying levels of trauma and they usually require a more intense, hands-on approach to foster care.
How old are children in foster care with Nexus?
We serve youth from ages 0 to 21.
I’m considering becoming a foster parent. Where can I learn more?
We are always looking for great people who want to truly invest in youth. When you become a foster parent licensed through Nexus, you have the opportunity to serve children in and near your community. You’ll be responsible for meeting their basic needs and playing a key role in their health and healing as a team member focused on the short- and long-term needs of the child. Our team of professionals will provide support, resources, and specialized training to help you successfully care for each child.

How difficult is it to be a foster parent?
Foster parenting is a serious commitment. It comes with challenges, but is also highly rewarding. It requires the willingness to offer unconditional love to children and youth who are struggling. It requires the ability to bond and attach to children quickly, but still be able to separate from those children when they are reunited with their family or a permanent family is found.
We provide plenty of support and training to our foster families, and we’re always here to help.
Who can become a foster parent?
Foster parents can be single or married, have children of their own, have no children, be grandparents, or be hoping to adopt. All that’s needed is a bedroom for the foster child, a commitment to their safety, and a complete willingness to:
- invest in their future
- accept their histories
- welcome them as a family member
- learn and grow
- and be part of the child’s support team
In order to be licensed as a foster parent, you must complete the licensure process as well as be at least 21 years of age.
What kind of support does Nexus provide to foster parents?
We provide each family with a licensed social worker—both for the parents and the foster child—as well as 24-hour on-call support. We also host monthly support group meetings with other foster parents and provide relief care for your foster child so you can have an occasional break.
Will I be responsible for the financial needs of a foster youth?
No. All children in foster care qualify for Medical Assistance or are covered by their parents’ medical insurance, so you will accrue no medical bills or responsibility to pay medical bills for your foster child. In addition, school lunches are free for all foster children.
Beyond that, each individual state determines a reimbursement rate for foster providers. Using that reimbursement, licensed providers are responsible for meeting each youth’s basic needs, including housing, food, clothing, supervision, school fees, reasonable school and recreational activities, transportation, allowances, and personal needs. Payment for extraordinary expenses are negotiated directly with your Nexus agency.
Is training required to become a Nexus foster parent?
Yes! One of our most important goals is to fully equip and continually train our foster parents on how to best meet the needs of the youth in their care. We have specific education requirements for each of our foster programs. Please speak with your Nexus foster care contact to learn the specific requirements.
